Installing the Drive | Device Drivers


Dell-Installed Drives

Dell performs the installation and setup on any CD-ROM drive that is shipped as part of a system, including loading the appropriate device drivers when the operating system is installed. The drive is ready for use when you receive your system. No further installation or configuration is necessary.  


Installing the Drive

Drives Purchased Separately as Customer Kits

Procedure:

Install the CD-R/RW drive

  1. Remove the CD-R/RW drive from its packaging
  2. Turn off the power to your computer and unplug the power cord
  3. Remove the cover, face plate and clips or brackets used to secure internal devices.
  4. Please check the manual of your computer or contact Dell customer service when you mount the CD-R/RW drive to your computer.
  5. If you are upgrading from another CD-RW, determine whether your old drive has an IDE interface, then disconnect and remove the old drive from your bay.
  6. Verify Jumpers are set to CSEL (Cable Select) as shown in the Jumper Settings section of this users guide. Locate the secondary IDE connector.
  7. Connect to your existing secondary IDE connector.
  8. Connect the audio cable between the CD-R/RW drive and the sound card (if necessary).
  9. Connect the power cable.
  10. Close your system case by re-installing the cover and face plate (which were removed step 3).
  11. Install the software package that came with the CD-R/RW drive. For any additional questions, please consult the installation instructions provide with the software package.

Device Drivers

When using Windows 98, Window NT Workstation Ver.4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows XP no special device driver is required.

If purchasing the drive as a customer kit then the MS-DOS drivers will be provided on a 3.5'' Floppy disk. These drivers are required to enable support for the CD-R/RW drive in DOS. Since Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Me or windows XP feature built-in driver support for the CD-R/RW drive, no additional drivers are required.
