Dell Installed Drives

Dell performs the installation and setup on hard-disk drives that are shipped as part of a system. After being installed, hard-disk drives that are part of a system configuration are formatted and partitioned before the operating system is installed. The drive is ready for use when you receive your system.

For the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system, EIDE drives smaller than 8.4 GB use a 16-bit file allocation table (FAT16) file system with a 2-GB primary partition and extended partitions of 2 GB or less. Drives larger than 8.4 GB use a single partition with the 32-bit file allocation table (FAT32) file system.

For the Windows 98 operating system, all drives use a single partition with FAT32 file system.

For the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, all drives have a 2-GB primary partition that uses the FAT16 file system and a secondary partition formatted in the NT file system (NTFS).
