Hardware Installation: Dell™ PowerVault™ 120T DLT1 Autoloader User's Guide

Unpacking and Inspecting Installing the SCSI Cable and Terminator
Installing the Host Adapter Preparing the Host Computer System

The PowerVault 120T DLT1 installation is quick and convenient. Simply check all necessary SCSI connections, install the application software (backup or otherwise) on the host computer, and apply power. For further convenience, the factory installed PowerVault 120T DLT1 defaults are sufficient for most applications.

Unpacking and Inspecting

If the operating environment differs from the storage environment by 15° C (30° F) or more, allow the unit to acclimate to the surrounding environment for at least 12 hours before opening the shipping carton.
  • Unpack all items from the carton.
  • Save the packing materials in case the system is moved or shipped in the future. The PowerVault 120T DLT1 must be shipped in the original or equivalent packing materials to maintain the validity of the warranty.

Checking the Accessories

Check to make certain the following items arrived with the PowerVault 120T DLT1 package in good condition:
  • Power cord
  • One DLT1 cleaning cartridge
  • Seven DLTtapeTM IV data cartridges
  • One SCSI cable with 68 pin connector
  • One 68 pin SCSI bus terminator
  • One hardcopy multilanguage Quick Start Guide
  • Multilanguage CD including HTML files for the Installation and Operations Guide and Quick Start Guide
  • Two keys for the front door, taped to the rear panel
  • One low voltage differential host adapter card with supporting documentation and drivers (possibly pre-installed if ordered with the Dell PowerEdgeTM Server).

Installing the Host Adapter

The host computer system must include native SCSI capability or an appropriate host adapter. An LVD host adapter card is provided. Please install the host adapter card prior to proceeding. Refer to the host adapter's documentation for specific installation directions.

After the host adapter card is installed, proceed to Installing the SCSI Cable and Terminator for further instructions.

Installing the SCSI Cable and Terminator

NOTE: The interface cable provided has the appropriate connectors on each end. The PowerVault 120T DLT1 employs a 68 pin SCSI connector on the rear panel.

TERM POWER for the SCSI bus is supplied by the PowerVault 120T DLT1.

  • Connect the SCSI cable to either of the SCSI connectors on the rear panel of the PowerVault 120T DLT1.
  • Connect the PowerVault 120T DLT1 to the SCSI bus (Figure 1). When the PowerVault 120T DLT1 is the last device on the SCSI bus, install the SCSI terminator onto the remaining SCSI connector on the rear panel of the PowerVault 120T DLT1.
  • Connect the free end of the SCSI cable to the connector on the host computer's SCSI adapter.
  • If one or more additional devices are going to be connected to the bus after the PowerVault 120T DLT1, connect an appropriate cable between the remaining SCSI connector on the rear panel of the PowerVault 120T DLT1 and the next device.

Connecting More than One PowerVault 120T DLT1

If connecting more than one PowerVault 120T DLT1 on the same SCSI channel, simply connect each unit to the previous unit using an additional shielded interface cable. Use either SCSI connector on the PowerVault 120T DLT1 for the interface cable connection. Configure each PowerVault 120T DLT1 unit with a unique drive SCSI ID and loader ID. The PowerVault 120T DLT1s  will not function properly if they have the same SCSI IDs.

Preparing the Host Computer System

Installing the Application Software

Before proceeding, refer to the software installation guide for instructions. Use the instructions to install the PowerVault's backup/controlling software onto the host computer.
