Mounting the Rail Assemblies

This section contains a detailed description of the steps to install the PowerVault 120T DLT1 or dual PowerVault 120T DLT1s into a standard 19" rack mount assembly.

Tools Required

  • # 1 Philips screwdriver
  • # 1 flat-blade screwdriver
  • 3/8" nut-driver or wrench
  • 11/32" nut-driver or wrench

Preparing the Rail Assemblies

  • Verify the alignment of the ends of each of the two front slide rail assemblies (Figure 1). The leading edge of the slide rail should be aligned with the trailing edge of the notch in the front outer rail adapter. If necessary, adjust the alignment of each rail assembly by loosening the two 8-32 x 3/8" pan-head screws. Reposition the ends of the slide rail until aligned, then tighten the two screws.

Figure 1. Rail Position Detail

  • Using two 8-32 x 3/8" pan-head screws and 8-32 Kepnuts for each assembly, attach the rear outer rail adapters to the front slide rail assemblies. Do not fully tighten the screws at this time. The rear outer adapters are identical and symmetrical. Be certain to install them so that the flange on the rear is facing the same direction as the flange on the front slide rail assemblies (Figure 1).
  • Remove the eight M6 x 10 x 10 mm Philips pan-head screws and four nut plates from the ends of the slide rail assemblies. Set these aside. They will be used when the rails are installed in the rack.

Mounting the Rail Assemblies

  • Secure the front flange of each front slide rail assembly to the vertical mounting rails of the rack using two M6 x 10 x 10 mm Philips pan-head screws and a nut plate (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Mounting the Rail Assemblies

NOTE: The mounting flanges on the ends of the slide rail assemblies have to be positioned on the outside of the vertical mounting rails, and the rubber stop on the slide rail faces inward and toward the rear.

  • Slide the rear outer rail adapters on each assembly inward or outward as necessary until the rear flanges just slip over the outside of the vertical mounting rails. Secure the rear flanges of the slide rail assemblies to the vertical mounting rails using four M6 x 10 x 10 mm Philips pan-head screws and two nut plates. Fully tighten all screws on the slide rail assemblies.
  • If the slide rail assemblies are too short to fit the rack after fully extending the rear outer rail adapters, fully tighten the four 8-32 x 3/8" pan-head screws, which secure the rear outer adapters to the slide rail assemblies. Then, loosen the four 8-32 x 3/8" pan-head screws which secure the front rail adapters to the slide rail assemblies. Pull the front outer rail adapters away from the rails until the assemblies fit in the rack. After adjusting both assemblies to fit, fully tighten all screws.

Installing the PowerVault 120T DLT1 Support Box Assembly

  • With an assistant, lift the PowerVault 120T DLT1 support box assembly into position. Guide the slides mounted on the PowerVault 120T DLT1 and support box into the slide rail assemblies on the rack.
  • Push the PowerVault 120T V support box assembly in until the front mounting brackets contact the rack's vertical mounting rails (Figure 3).

Figure 3. Installing the Support Box Assembly

  • Install a cage nut in the mounting hole of each of the vertical mounting rails, which line up with the thumbscrews on the front mounting brackets. The spring flanges on the cage nuts are designed to lock into the holes.
  • Push in each of the thumbscrews on the front mounting brackets and turn the screws clockwise to secure the PowerVault 120T DLT1 support box assembly to the vertical mounting rails.
  • Install the AC line cord, SCSI cable, and SCSI terminator to the rear of the PowerVault 120T DLT1 by following the instructions in Hardware Installation.
  • Use the cable ties to secure the AC line cord and SCSI cable to the rack. Be sure to leave enough slack in them to allow the PowerVault 120T DLT1 to be pulled out of the rack on its rails as far as possible.
The PowerVault 120T DLT1 is now ready for use.

Rack Mounting Dual PowerVault 120T DLT1s

The PowerVault 120T DLT1 has been designed so two units may be mounted side-by-side in a single rack slot. To add a second PowerVault 120T DLT1 to one currently mounted in a rack, follow these instructions:
  • Remove the first unit from the rack by reversing the procedure in Installing the PowerVault 120T DLT1 Support Box Assembly. Leave the rails in the rack. They will be used later to mount both units.
  • If no unit is mounted in a rack, start at the beginning of this appendix and follow the instructions for preparing and mounting the rail assemblies. After the rails are mounted in the rack, return to the following instruction point.
  • Place both PowerVault 120T DLT1 units on an appropriate work surface. The first PowerVault 120T DLT1 (now referred to as "PowerVault 120T DLT1 #1") should have an attached support box assembly. The second unit ("PowerVault 120T DLT1 #2") does not have an attached support box assembly.
The PowerVault 120T DLT1 and the support box are secured to each other by a set of nut plates and four flathead screws. To separate the assemblies, remove the screws that secure the support box to the nut plates. One nut plate is accessible from the middle rear panel. The other nut plate is accessible from the bottom front panel.
  • To separate the two assemblies, remove the two flat head screws that secure the support box to the nut plates (Figure 4). Do not remove the two screws that secure the PowerVault 120T DLT1 #1 to the nut plates.

  • Pull the support box assembly away from the PowerVault 120T DLT1 #1 chassis (Figure 5). Set the assembly aside.

  • Place the left side of the PowerVault 120T DLT1 #2 against the right side of of the PowerVault 120T DLL #1. The nut plates attached to the PowerVault 120T DLT1 #1 fits into the middle rear slot and bottom front slot of the of the PowerVault 120T DLL #2 (Figure 6).
  • Attach PowerVault 120T DLT1 #2 to the nut plates by securing the two flat head screws.

  • Install the slide (Item 4, Figure 7) to the right side of PowerVault 120T DLT1 #2 using two 8-31 x 3/8" screws (Item 5, Figure 7).
  • Install the front mounting bracket to the right side of PowerVault 120T DLT1 #2 using two 4-40 x 1/4" pan head Philips screws (Item 6, Figure 7)
