Before You Begin

Obtain the following information from your System Administrator:

  • A Client Name (SSID) for your wireless card
  • SSID(s) for your wireless card
  • WEP Key information for your wireless card

Note: There are four separate profiles for your wireless network. Each profile has an SSID and a WEP key corresponding to your current wireless network. You can configure all four profiles in advance (refer to Completing the Setup section), but only one profile is active at a time. If you move to another wireless network with a different SSID and WEP key, you can manually switch to the appropriate profile without having to retype the SSID and WEP information.

  • For Microsoft® Windows® networking, your Customer Name and Workgroup Name
  • For your network account, your User Name and Password
  • Your IP address (unless using a DHCP server)
  • The Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series 1150PC 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Adapter
  • The Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD
  • A laptop with a CD-ROM and a Mini PCI Card slot
Notes:  Dell cannot provide you with this information, as it is specific to your network.
Network Name (SSID) - The Network Name (also known as the Service Set Identifier [SSID] controls access to a given wireless network. This value MUST match the Network Name of any/all Access Points that you want to communicate with. If the value does not match, you are not granted access to the system. The value can be up to 32 characters in length, and the Network Name is case sensitive.
WEP - This is a form of data encryption used to scramble the data sent over the airwaves. You must set the WEP Key in the client to match the WEP Key used by the Access Point because you will ONLY associate to Access Points that have a matching WEP Key. WEP can be enabled or disabled and is optional.
