  Version Checking

The Array Manager Utilities allows you to easily view and modify your Array Manager configuration on a local or remote Microsoft® Windows NT® or Windows® 2000 managed node or a remote NetWare® managed node. Array Manager Utilities allows you to:

  • Start and stop the Array Manager service.

  • Add and remove support for specific RAID controllers.

  • Add and remove support for the PowerVault™ 660F Fibre Channel controllers. The PowerVault 660F management can also be set to direct attach mode for non-SAN configurations.

  • Add and remove support for SNMP Management.

  • Check required hardware and software versions.

Note The PowerVault 660F controller can be used only on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 node.

Starting and Stopping the Array Manager Service

To open the Array Manager Utilities, click Start | Programs | Dell OpenManage Applications | Array Manager and select Array Manager Utilities.

The Array Manager service is what allows communication with storage hardware in your system. Stopping the service will therefore stop this communication and render any console monitoring inoperative. The Array Manager service has been designed to run at all times for constant storage integrity.

To stop the service for any reason, press the Stop button. Use the Start button to start the service.

Command Line Options for NetWare

The Array Manager Utilities options for NetWare do not include the ability to stop the Array Manager service remotely. However, these options are available from the NetWare server console. To enable this feature, you must load vxcmds.nlm. If you checked the "Automatically load Array Manager when NetWare is started" check box during installation, this feature is already enabled. Array Manager's NetWare command-line options include:

vxstart

Starts the Array Manager service

vxstop (-f )

Stops the Array Manager service (-f forces the stop, even if clients are currently connected)

vxproviders

Displays a list of the currently loaded providers

Note In Windows NT and Windows 2000, the Array Manager service is a system service. In NetWare, the Array Manager service is an NLM.

Adding and Removing Components

The following components can be added or removed:

  • PowerEdge RAID controller (PERC) management

  • PowerVault 660F Fibre Channel controller management

  • SNMP Management

Click the check box next to the desired component to add it. Any changes you make will take effect only when you click the Apply button.

You may find that some of the options in the Array Manager Utilities are disabled after you connect to a specific managed node. This usually occurs when specific requirements with regard to that option have not been met on that managed node. Also, some options are not available with earlier versions of Array Manager.

When using Array Manager to manage a PowerVault 660F in a SAN configuration, you must set the managed node on only one server to do PowerVault 660F management. The managed node is capable of managing multiple PowerVault 660F arrays, but each PowerVault 660F array must not have multiple Array Manager nodes managing it.

If the managed node is configured to do PowerVault 660F Fibre Channel controller management, you will need to also select direct-attach mode if the node is directly connected (HBA to controller) to the PowerVault 660F. Do not select this option if the PowerVault 660F RAID controller will be shared by multiple Windows servers (that is, in a SAN configuration). Doing so may result in data corruption.

Caution You can change this setting only when there are no virtual disks configured on the PowerVault 660F RAID controller.

Local and Remote Server Management

By default, Array Manager Utilities will attempt to manage the local system. Remote server management requires authentication first for security purposes. To connect to a remote system:

  1. For a remote Windows server connection, click the Remote Server option on the Windows tab of the Array Manager Utilities.

For a NetWare server connection, click the NetWare tab.

  1. Enter your server name, user name, and password.

  2. Click Connect!

If the connection was successful, you should see information about the configuration of that server.

Note Novell's Client 32 version 4.6 or later is required to make a connection to a NetWare server.

Volume Capacity Monitoring

When volume capacity monitoring is enabled, Array Manager monitors the NTFS volumes on the local server for the amount of space used. When the space used reaches 90%, a warning event is logged in the Array Manager event log and the Windows application log. When the space used reaches 98%, an error event is logged.

When enabled, volume capacity monitoring can degrade system performance due to the increased CPU usage. For this reason, volume capacity monitoring is disabled by default. Your operating system may also have its own volume capacity monitoring function. If so, see your operating system documentation for more information.

To enable volume capacity monitoring,

  1. Launch the Array Manager Utilities by clicking Start | Programs | Dell OpenManage Applications | Array Manager and selecting Array Manager Utilities.

  2. Select the Volume Capacity Monitoring check box on the Windows tab.

  3. Click Apply and then Close to exit the Array Manager Utilities.

For information related to volume capacity monitoring, see the following:

Version Checking

The Array Manager Utilities automatically checks the versions of required or recommended hardware and software on your local system. This includes:

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is required for viewing the online help. For more information on the version requirements, see "Online Help Requirements."

FAST Application Status

Due to compatibility issues with FAST, Array Manager cannot be installed on a system that has FAST installed. The Array Manager Utilities check whether FAST is installed on the system.

Drivers and Firmware for PERC Controllers

These include PERC 2/SC, 2/DC, 3/SC, 3/DCL, 3/DC, and 3/QC controllers. You can click the Versions tab in Array Manager Utilities to see whether your current drivers and firmware are supported.

See the Readme file for driver and firmware requirements, as well as other system requirements. For any updates that occur between software releases, refer to the Dell Web site at:

http://support.dell.com

Drivers and Firmware for PERC 2 Controllers

These include PERC 2, PERC 2/Si, PERC 3/Si, and PERC 3/Di.

The PERC 2 RAID controller contains four channels. PERC 2/Si and PERC 3/Si are single integrated channel controllers. The PERC 3/Di is a dual integrated channel controller.

Earlier versions of the PERC 2 controller are no longer supported, but the PERC 2 controller can be upgraded to the latest drivers and firmware. You can click the Versions tab in Array Manager Utilities to see whether your current drivers and firmware are supported.

See the Readme file for driver and firmware requirements, as well as other system requirements. For any updates that occur between software releases, refer to the Dell Web site at:
