Diagnostic Codes

Your computer is equipped with four diagnostic code indicators, which are labeled "A," "B," "C," and "D" on the back of the computer. Each of the four indicators can be yellow or green. When the computer is turned on or restarted and the computer is functioning normally, the indicators flash at the beginning of the start-up routine. After the computer boots (starts), all four of the indicators become green to signify normal computer operation.

If a malfunction is detected and the computer fails to boot, the indicators display a code that identifies the problem. In this situation, write down the diagnostic code displayed and look it up in Table 1. If the indicators display a code that is not illustrated in Table 1, contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

Diagnostic Code Definition Corrective Action
wpeD.jpg (2430 bytes) Power-up default Make sure that the computer is connected to an electrical outlet, and then check whether the power indicator is on or off. If the power indicator is off, press the power/sleep button.

If the computer still does not start, contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

wpeC.jpg (2505 bytes) USB port connector or a device connected to it has failed initialization Disconnect the device from the USB port connector. If the problem persists, contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.
wpeB.jpg (2678 bytes) Computer has started and turned over control to the operating system No action is necessary.

MS-DOS�–based Dell diagnostics are located in the DIAGS directory on the Dell WebPC Computers Recovery CD. Consult the READ1ST.TXT file located in the DIAGS directory for instructions on running diagnostics from the Dell WebPC Computers Recovery CD.


System Messages

The first column in Table 2 lists system messages that may appear on the screen during the start-up routine or during normal computer operation. The second column in the table lists probable causes of the messages, and the third column provides either a corrective action or refers you to a source for resolving the problem. If you receive a system message that is not listed in Table 2, contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

CMOS Time and Date Not Set

The system configuration information in the system setup program is incorrect, or the battery charge may be low. Enter the system setup program, and verify the system configuration information; then restart the computer. If the problem persists, contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.
Invalid Boot Diskette The operating system cannot be located on drive C or the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Enter the system setup program, and confirm that the drive is properly identified or you have bootable media in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Keyboard Error The BIOS has detected a stuck key. Make sure that nothing is resting on the keyboard; if a key appears to be stuck, carefully try to pry it up.

If the problem persists or you cannot locate the stuck key, you may need to replace the keyboard. Contact Dell for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

No ROM BASIC The operating system cannot be located on drive C or the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Enter the system setup program and confirm that the drive is properly identified or you have bootable media in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
