Overview

NOTE: The drivers for your system are provided on the Dell WebPC Recovery CD. To reinstall your system's drivers from this CD, refer to the following procedures.

Your computer came with preinstalled software, such as a suite of application programs and device drivers—no further installation is needed. However, if you need to restore your computer's original configuration, use the Dell WebPC Recovery CD, which is a snapshot of your computer the day you received it. Use it to restore the original configuration of your hard-disk drive, operating system, and any Dell-installed application programs.

NOTICE: The Dell WebPC Recovery CD erases everything on your hard-disk drive, including all data files that are not backed up. If possible, back up your files first and use this CD only as a final option to resolve any problems with your computer.

NOTICE: Always use the Dell WebPC Recovery CD to reinstall your operating system. Installing your operating system through media other than the Dell WebPC Recovery CD disables the Dell E-support™ function of your computer and terminates the free technical support you receive via the E-support tool.

Reinstalling Drivers

If you want to reinstall drivers for a computer component or device, run the E-support diagnostics on that component or device. If the diagnostics determine that drivers must be reinstalled, the E-support tool provides information on performing the reinstallation. For more information on using the E-support tool or obtaining assistance on reinstalling software, see Chapter 2,  "Using Dell E-support," in the
Dell WebPC Computers User's Guide

Reinstalling the System Software

To restore your computer's hard-disk drive using the Dell WebPC Recovery CD, perform the following steps:

  1. Back up your data files. For more information, see "Backing Up Data Files" in Chapter 3 of the Dell WebPC Computers User's Guide.

  2. Back up your data files to a second set of media in case your first set does not work properly.

  3. Insert the Recovery CD into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and if the computer is on, turn it off.

  4. Turn the computer on.

The computer automatically runs the CD and displays a list of options.

  5. Select Start computer with CD-ROM support.

  6. At the prompt, type recover and press <Enter>.

The Dell WebPC Recovery CD restores your hard-disk drive, which takes about ten minutes. After the restoration is complete, you are prompted to restart the computer.

  7. Remove the Dell WebPC Recovery CD from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and press <Enter> to restart your computer.
NOTE: You can reinstall Microsoft Works Suite and Microsoft Word 2000 without restoring the hard-disk drive. Use the CDs for the Microsoft application programs.

To reinstall software not installed by Dell, you must have the software manufacturer's CD(s). For more information, see the documentation that came with the software.
