Introduction

The complete setup of your TrueMobile 1150 Series Wireless Network will consist of the following steps:


Installing your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card

Your Dell TrueMobile Mini PCI Card should come pre-installed. If you have a machine with an existing empty Mini PCI Card slot and wish to install a Dell TrueMobile Mini PCI Card, please follow the steps below. 

Note: For more information on installing the TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, including illustrations, see the Getting Started poster that came with the card. 

  1. Shut down your portable computer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Insert the Mini PCI Card into your portable computer.

    Since the insertion of a Mini PCI Card into a portable computer depends on the structure of that portable computer, please refer to the documentation in your computer manual on how to insert a Mini PCI Card into the system. Shown in the following steps is how to install the Mini PCI Card into the Dell Latitude™ C600 and the Dell Inspiron™ 4000 computers.

    Note: Make sure that your portable computer supports a type IIIA Mini PCI Card. Your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card is a Type IIIA Mini PCI Card, and can only fit in a portable computer that supports type IIIA Mini PCI Cards.

  3. Turn over your computer and remove the screws holding the Mini PCI lid.
  4. Remove the Mini PCI lid.
  5. Carefully line up the Dell TrueMobile Mini PCI Card edge connector with the Mini PCI connector in the machine.
  6. Press the Dell TrueMobile Mini PCI Card firmly into the card slot and gently push it down until a click is heard or the card appears seated.
  7. Connect the antenna cable from your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card to the integrated antenna on your portable computer. 
  8. Your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card kit should come with an antenna cable.
  9. Connect either end of the cable to the antenna connector on your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card by pressing the cable end of the cable connector on the Mini PCI Card until you hear a snap, and the cable interlocks with the connector. 
  10. Connect the other end of the cable to the integrated antenna connector on your portable computer. Please refer to the manual of your portable computer for the location of the integrated antenna connector.  (It should look exactly like the antenna connector on your TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card). 
  11. Close the Mini PCI lid on your computer, and turn the computer on.
  12. The Microsoft® Windows® operating system will detect a hardware change on your computer and automatically performs a hardware setup. If you are prompted to restart your computer, select Yes
  13. After Windows has fully restarted, complete the installation based on the operating system that is running on your computer.

Windows 98 Mini PCI Card Installation

  1. Windows 98 will automatically detect the TrueMobile Mini PCI Card, briefly open a New Hardware Found window, and start collecting information for a driver information database. If your system was purchased with a TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, the drivers will load automatically and you will be asked to restart your computer (Go to step 15 now). If your system was not purchased with a TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, proceed to step 2. 
  2. The Add New Hardware Wizard appears. If the wizard detects the Texas Instruments PCI-1410 Card Bus Controller, insert the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD, wait 10 seconds, and click Next.
  3. At the next window, select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and click Next.
  4. At the next window, uncheck Floppy disk drives and click Specify a location
  5. Type C:\windows\options\cabs in the text field, and click Next
  6. After Windows finds the correct drivers, click Next

    Note: During the installation, you may be prompted with dialog boxes asking you to enter a path to additional required files. If the required Windows files are installed on your computer, they may be located in the folder C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Type C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Click OK to copy the required files. If Windows again prompts you for the Windows CD, insert the Windows CD that came with your computer into your CD-ROM drive. Type x:\win98 in the entry field (where x is the CD-ROM drive letter). Click OK to copy the required files.

  7. After Windows installs the correct drivers, click Finish.
  8. Click Yes to restart the computer. 
  9. After you restart your computer, the Add New Hardware Wizard appears. Click Next

  10. At the next window, select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and click Next

  11. At the next window, uncheck Floppy disk drives and select Specify a location
  12. Type x:\win98 in the text field (where x is the CD-ROM drive letter). Click Next
  13. After Windows finds the driver, click Next

    Note: During the installation, you may be prompted with dialog boxes asking you to enter a path to additional required files.   14. After Windows finishes installing the drivers, click Finish.

  15. Click Yes to restart your computer. 

 The driver installation is complete. To confirm that the installation was successful:

  • Click Start->Settings->Control Panel.
  • Double click on the System icon.
  • Click on the Device Manager tab.
  • Click on the plus next to Network Adapters.

 "TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card" should appear on the list. If there is a red x or yellow exclamation point, see the Troubleshooting section. If no red x or yellow exclamation point appears next to the network adapter icon in Control Panel, the installation was successful.

Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Mini PCI Card Installation

  1. If your system was purchased with a TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, the drivers will load automatically and you will be asked to restart your computer (go to step 9 now). If this is not the case, proceed to step 2.  
  2. Insert the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD, wait 10 seconds, and click Next.
  3. If the wizard detects the Texas Instruments PCI-1410 Card Bus Controller, select Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended). Click Next.
  4. After Windows finds the new drivers, click Finish. If you are asked to restart your computer, click Yes.   
  5. When the Add New Hardware Wizard appears, insert the TrueMobile CD and wait 10 seconds. 
  6. Click Specify a location, and ensure that Floppy disk drives, CD-ROM drives, and Microsoft Windows Update are not selected.

  7. Type x:\me-2k (where x is the letter for your CD or DVD drive) and then click Next.

  8. After Windows finds the driver, click Next.

  9. Click Finish, and click Yes to restart your computer.

The driver installation is complete. To confirm that the installation was successful:

  • Click Start->Settings->Control Panel.
  • Click on view all control panel options.
  • Double click on the System icon.
  • Click on the Device Manager tab.
  • Click the plus next to Network Adapters.

"TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card" should appear on the list. If there is a red x or yellow exclamation point, see the Troubleshooting section. If no red x or yellow exclamation point appears next to the network adapter icon in Control Panel, the installation was successful.

Windows 2000 Mini PCI Card Installation

  1. If your system was purchased with a TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, the drivers will load automatically and you will be asked to restart your computer (go to step 8 now). If this is not the case, proceed to step 2.  
  2. If the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, insert the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD.

  3. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended). Click Next.

  4. Select Specify a location. Click Next.

  5. Type x:\me-2k in the text field (where x is the CD-ROM driver letter).
  6. Windows will locate the driver on your CD-ROM drive. Click Next.
  7. After Windows has finished installing the software, click Finish

  8. Click Yes to restart your computer.

Note: If the computer is running Windows 2000, the Mini PCI Card will not work without additional software. Installing Client Manager software automatically installs the additional software. If you do not install Client Manager, follow the instructions in Installing the Software Necessary for Windows 2000.

The driver installation is complete. To confirm the installation was successful:

  • Click Start->Settings->Control Panel.
  • Double click on the System icon.
  • Click on the Hardware tab.
  • Click on the Device Manager button.
  • Click on Network Adapters.

"TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card" should appear on the list. If there is a red x or yellow exclamation point, see the Troubleshooting section. If no red x or yellow exclamation point appears next to the network adapter icon in Control Panel, the installation was successful. 

Windows XP Mini PCI Card Installation

After you install the TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card, Windows XP (Personal or Professional) detects the card and installs the drivers automatically.  This only takes a few seconds. You will not be prompted with any screens, and you do not need to restart the computer.

To confirm that the installation was successful:

  • Click Start->Control Panel.
  • Double-click the System icon. (If System icon is not listed, click Switch to Classic View, and then click the System icon.)
  • Click the Hardware tab.
  • Click the Device Manager button.
  • Click Network Adapters.

"Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card" should appear on the list. If there is a red x or yellow exclamation point next to the network adapter icon, see the Troubleshooting section. If you do not see a red x or yellow exclamation point, the installation was successful. 

 


Installing the Software Necessary for Windows 2000

The additional software for Windows 2000 is installed when you install the Client Manager software. If you do not install Client Manager, perform the following steps to install the necessary software: 

  1. Insert the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. If the Main Menu screen below does not appear automatically, select Start->Run and then type x:\setup.exe (where x is your CD-ROM drive letter) and click OK.

  2. Click on Install Software.
  3. Click on Install Necessary Software for Windows 2000.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  5. After the installation is complete, click Yes to restart the computer.


Installing the Client Manager Software

The TrueMobile 1150 Series Client Manager is a software utility that you can use to:

  • Check the quality of your wireless connection.
  • View/change the settings of your network connection.
  • Monitor your network connection.

On all computers that are not new Dell computers, you must install the Client Manager Utility from the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD. New Dell computers that were ordered with TrueMobile 1150 Series already have Client Manager installed. Do the following: 

  1. Insert the Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. If the Main Menu screen below does not appear automatically, select Start->Run and then type x:\setup.exe (where x is your CD-ROM drive letter) and click OK.

  2. Click on Install Software.
  3. On the Software Menu screen, click on Install Client Manager and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

    Note: (For Windows 2000 only) If you have not installed the software necessary for using the Mini PCI Card with Windows 2000, it is installed at this point. Follow the instructions to complete the installation, and restart the computer when prompted to do so.

  4. The TrueMobile Client Manager icon, ,  will now appear on the desktop. Double-click the icon on the desktop and then double-click the icon that appears in the system tray,  , to start Client Manager. You can also start Client Manager by clicking Start->Programs->Dell TrueMobile 1150->Client Manager and then double-clicking the icon that appears in the system tray.

Note: It is recommended that you configure the Client Manager to start whenever Microsoft Windows starts.
