Connecting additional computers to the network

For Wireless Installations Only
Before you begin, the wireless Network Name (also known as “SSID”) of the wireless adapter on your additional portable or desktop computer(s) must be configured with the same SSID and WEP settings as the router. If you have not changed the SSID or WEP settings of the router, the default setting is “wireless” and WEP is disabled. This will allow your computer(s) to communicate to the wireless router so that you can begin your installation.

For instructions on how to adjust these settings, see the user’s guide for the wireless network adapter on your additional portable or desktop computer(s).

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Insert the TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer you would like to add. (See Figure 1).
  3. From the main menu, click Installation and select Setup Additional Computers.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)--About the Router

  1. What should I do if I do not have a DSL or cable modem connection?

    (a) Contact your local Internet Service Provider and subscribe to a broadband Internet service. The TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router should work with most ISP broadband connection through cable or DSL modem.

NOTE: Dell does not support using the TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router with a dial-up modem

    (b) If you don’t have an Internet connection, you can set the router to be in Access Point mode. Please refer to the section “Setting up as an Access Point” in the user’s guide, located on the TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router CD, for more details. See FAQ question 5 for instructions on how to launch the user’s guide.

  2. Why can’t I connect to Internet via the router after following the installation instructions in this guide?

Applying the wrong settings on the router may cause this problem or there is some incompatibility issue between the router and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). See the latest information on the TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router at www.support.dell.com. To access the Dell Support site, remove the router from the network and connect your computer directly to the cable or DSL modem using the instructions provided by your ISP.

  3. Will any software on my computer(s) conflict with the router?

You should disable any connection sharing software on your computer(s) – such as Microsoft Internet connection Sharing (ICS), 3Com HomeClick and Intel Anypoint ISS – and proxy software – such as Wingate and Sygate. These types of software will no longer be needed when you network your systems with this router. You can disable this type of software by clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Also disable any Internet security software (or) firewall that might block the router connection.

  4. How do I convert my first computer’s Ethernet (wired) connection to a wireless connection?

Install a wireless network adapter. Disconnect the Ethernet cable between the Computer and the LAN port of the wireless router. Follow the steps in section Connecting additional computers to the network, located in your TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router Quick Start Guide, to convert the connection successfully.

  5. Where is my User’s Guide?

Your user’s guide is located on your TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router CD. To launch your user’s guide, insert the CD and click User’s Guide. Once the router installation has completed successfully, you can find the user’s guide on your computer by clicking Start -> Programs -> Dell TrueMobile 1184 wireless broadband router -> User’s Guide.

  6. What should I do if my first computer is connected to a cable or DSL modem using a USB cable?

The TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router installation software does not support the configuration for this type of connection. Please refer to the section “Installing and Configuring the router for non-Ethernet cable connections” in the user’s guide to install and configure the router. See FAQ question 5 for instructions on how to launch the user’s guide.
